Past and Present (Some Facts About Russian Bible School)
In the Fall of 1991 the children of Brentwood Oaks church collected coins in little "Bible banks" to give to the children of Russia. This collection resulted in the translation of the most popular English language Children's Bible, The Beginner's Bible, into the Russian language. Subsequently, Eastern European Mission printed ten's of thousands of these Bibles and RBS began distributing them to Russian seekers/believers who contacted RBS in response to nationwide Russia Radio network Bible programs.
In 1995, Brentwood teachers began to read translated letters and to write responses translated by the St. Petersburg RBS staff. The Russian Bible School was being born.
Brentwood's further involvement in Russia was stimulated when three media ministries, World Christian Broadcasting, Eastern European Mission and Herald of Truth, came to the Brentwood church elders in 1996 and requested that Brentwood begin considering the supervision of the correspondence work for Russia (for which the three ministries had extensive contacts). In February of 2000, sixty teachers were recruited within Brentwood church and, under the supervision of Kurt Holman and Gene Vance, the administration and teaching in RBS within Brentwood's oversight took shape. Then, on June 4, 2000, Frank Farr of EEM and Bruce Evans of Herald of Truth were present in the morning assembly of Brentwood church, in prayer, to begin Brentwood's partnership in God's work through the RBS ministry.
This ministry would not have been possible without the extraordinary love and dedication of each RBS staff member in St. Petersburg. It would be difficult now to quantify the number of letters received and sent from St. Petersburg since the early 1990's, but each RBS staff member treasures the memory of countless words and urgent requests of Russian seekers for the Word of God. Such words have spurred each staff member to work through many hardships and difficulties in this ministry... difficulties in customs, in Post Offices, in transportation, in communication, in housing, in finances, in equipment, in damaged literature... and the list could go on.
- RBS HAS SENT:
-
- MORE THAN 60,000 BIBLES,
- MORE THAN 62,000 CHILDREN BIBLES,
- MORE THAN 30,000 NEW TESTAMENTS,
- MORE THAN 95,000 PIECES OF CHRISTIAN LITERATURE,
- AND NUMBERLESS CASSETTES, DVD’S AND INFORMATIONAL LETTERS.
We pray God's guidance and wisdom as the future work of RBS is planned and implemented under the oversight of the Institute for Theology and Christian Ministry. The resources of RBS and the new ways through the internet of reaching and delivering the gospel of God's righteousness will, no doubt, result in different actual work for RBS... but the mission will remain, of teaching the gospel to Russian seekers that they might love God completely and in following Jesus Christ as Lord they might meet with other believers that God's purposes through the church for His reunification of His creation might be effected, according to His will... and to His glory. Amen. And God be praised.
